SEASCAPE @ Hastings Point

by Peter Diamond

On Saturday the 2nd of August 2008 Geoff Provost MP opened the new chapter of the Marine Environments Field Study and Resource Centre that was the brain child of Ted Brambleby and colleague Kerrie Trees.

The journey of Adventure Education started long before I knew them. For Ted and Kerrie a combined 45 years of teaching about the Marine Ecosystems will give you some background to their individual dedication to our environment. I will start by saying that I met Ted and Kerrie when searching for someone to train me to become a Dive instructor from open water certification approximately 9 years ago now.

You see they do everything to their utmost best .When I asked Ted to train me, he replied, it will probably take 12 to 18 months…no 4 week wonders here.. and it did take just over 12 months but I believe I turned out to be an extremely well trained diver for it.

Ted and Kerrie’s commitment to education is amazing to say the least. Ted “hand wrote” all of our dive assignments from his experiences and some from the text, if you had seen the size of some these you would have been astounded, it must have taken him hours as there were four of us.

SEASCAPE at the Northstar Holiday Resort Hastings Point now proudly boasts the only Marine Educational facility in the Tweed where children and teenagers from local and interstate schools come for day visit or a 2-3 day field trip to be further educated in the importance of maintaining the delicate balance of nature to ensure our earths future.

The schools can come and stay at the The North Star Holiday Village and enjoy their classes at the facility whilst also exploring the Rocky Shores, the Mangroves and Estuary, the Sand dune and Beach Zone, Wallum Heath and Temperate Forest of Hastings Point. Snorkelling and Kayaking are part of all excursion activities and even Dive training can be arranged with prior arrangement.

One fascinating feature of the centre is the hands on approach. A visually exciting display of marine preserved specimens combines well with the extra opportunity visitors are offered when they come face to face with the micro organisms that inhabit our foreshores with the live projection of micro communities from the microscope to the big screen, Ted and Kerrie offer a variety of opportunities to learn and explore the marine environment in a way that will leave you amazed.

SEASCAPE was made possible with the outstanding help from the proprietors of North Star Holiday Village at Hastings Point Ian and Dianna Beadel on the beautiful Tweed coast, who clearly saw the need and importance of a facility such as this, people with a vision of the future requirements to maintain our oceans.

SEASCAPE is a credit to the Tweed coast and a leading educational opportunity in the area. Give the centre a call on 02 66 763384 to make school enquiries, check opening hours and school holiday programs and check out what Adventure Education does best

…care for our Oceans and educate our future.
