Coastal Habitats

Coastal Relic forest

The Coastal Relic rainforest is dominated by the Tuckeroo. As well there is a dry sclerophyll forest –a pristine three tiered high ancient dune that supports a well developed dry eucalypt forest dominated by the brush box Tristania confertus.

We have a rich variety of coastal habitats all within easy walking distance of our centre.

Mangroves and Estuary

The diversity of habitats includes ecological enclaves of the tropical mangrove Rhyzophora and Aegicerus, and the dominant Avicennia with clearly defined zones of succulent salt loving plants, reeds and salt pans.

Wallum Heathland

Protected by dense dunes seaward and low forested mountains less than a kilometre inland is an ecosystem of Wallum Heathland unrivalled for it’s wealth of biodiversity.

Rocky shores

The Hastings Point Rocky Shore is a quietly sheltered unique, littoral environment. With its myriads of tidal pools, classically stepped rock platform, crevices and rocky faces it is an ecosystem of fascinating variety for the study of habitat, abiotic and biotic factors as well as biodiversity.

Beach and Sand dunes

These ecosystems offer distinct and pristine primary, secondary and tertiary dunes together with a classical distribution of plant colonisers, barrier zones and wandering dune breakthroughs.
